Margo
Manning is a New Orleans jewelry designer and metal artist who shows her
work nationally and throughout the New Orleans area. She studied
at East Carolina University, where she received a Bachelor and Master of
Fine Arts. Her work ranges from constructed one-of-a-kind pieces
to production lines of jewelry, and her recent exploration of Shadow Boxes
has taken her into an additional and new direction of larger scale sculptural
pieces. Margo also teaches jewelry and metal design. She has
conducted workshops and offered studio classes in New Orleans schools and
to private groups. |

“I
have always been drawn to antiquity and the persistent evolution of form.
We are surrounded by the marks of nature and time, and I find in this an
unending visual source of beauty. I approach a piece of jewelry as
a composition in metal first, and a movable, functional jewelry object
second. My intention is to create jewelry that appears to have been
changed by the elements of nature and time. The incorporation of
patterns, surface textures, shapes and hints of color into my jewelry is
the integration of the natural forces. Corrosion, abrasion by wind,
and exposure to water, heat and pressure over time are the ones that come
to mind. The primary techniques that I use to alter the visual and
physical characteristics of metal are embossing, etching, stamping, filing
and heating or oxidizing to make color changes. I am interested in
evoking a certain mystery in my jewelry and metalwork, the same mystery
associated with the unknowns of our past and the imagined glimpses into
our future.” |
